ANSWER:
He was Bobby Fuller of the Bobby Fuller Four and the song was "I Fought the Law". In Los Angeles, at age 23 he was found dead, soaked with gasoline, in his new car. It was obvious that he had also been beaten. It was ruled a suicide.

They were Duane Allman and Berry Oakley, members of the Allman Brothers Band. Duane Allman died on October 29, 1971; Berry Oakley died on November 11, 1972 .
