The 8th annual exchange is going to take place as usual during the SCENE Music Festival in the Market Square again this year. We will have a table likely right near admission that will be clearly marked for drop off of mixes throughout the day of the fest. We will be doing the swap at 8pm. This may be the final year for the exchange to happen, so don’t miss out!

The exchange itself shouldn’t take a terribly long time. We do plan on documenting it (taking pictures, scanning some covers etc), but the process will be quick and painless, so if there’s an act playing at this time you should still be able to catch at least a portion of their set.

In this modern age of the internet’s reign it’s very often that one will find their information within “the funny box” instead of buying magazines in print (or getting them free) like back in the day. For this very reason we present you with a convenient way of gaining more of an informed position on this somewhat-irrelevant topic by scouring the wretched or righteous sources (you decide) involved with the music industry, both from commercial and independent standings. I’m sure we’ve missed a bunch, but have mainly included what is typically responsible for ‘influencing public opinion’, or that which clever critics rely on to debase or simply replicate.

These resources are not to be considered a blue print or acknowledged as genius, so please proceed with a heavy grain of salt in hand, as in some cases they’re likely penned (or typed) by someone who may appreciate those terrible American Idol contestants. 5th ANNUAL JAMBOREE / Swap-Meet

The 5th annual swap-meet jamboree will take place this upcoming Sunday, July 22, 2007 from around 8:45pm until 9pm. Submissions can be dropped off throughout the day (as in the previous years) at the Niagara Mix-Tape Union booth in Market Square, which will likely be right beside the KEEP IT UP booth. Please visit SCENE Music Festival for all the current information available, as far as a schedule that day, or protocol on the trade-off itself.

We’re also going to have limited silk screened posters for (hopefully) all of the participants.

Tragic Trivia

FIND: Bomb The Bass – Beat Dis 12”

For years when I’ve gone hunting for used records I would always come across this one 12” (in the hip-hop section most often) that had bloodied smiley-face artwork and an ambiguous title scrawled in red graffiti style lettering. The first time I remember finding it I thought that the imagery was intended as a jab at “acid house” culture so it peaked my interest a little, but not enough to bite. From that point I started to subconsciously take notice of how often I would come across it, but I was typically too lazy to pursue, and would usually just thumb right passed.

Recently when I was fortunate enough to find it again I decided to finally check it out and feed my curiosity after all of these years. To my surprise not only did it end up being a solid listen, but also (with some research) apparently a classic “house” record and one of the first songs to introduce sampling into the mainstream charts, alongside such acts as M/A/R/R/S and others.

Bomb The Bass is a moniker used by Tim Simenon, a producer and DJ who started his career during the late 80s at the Wag Club in London, a local fixture that also birthed Jonathan More of Coldcut fame. He spent time in college studying music production and applied this basic knowledge coupled with his DJ experience to produce his first record "Beat Dis". The sample-oriented track blended hip-hop and funk sounds from the likes of the Jimmy Castor Bunch, with clips from “Thunderbirds” and “The Good, The Bad and The Ugly” soundtracks.

From the surprise popularity of the “Beat Dis” record, Simenon went on to produce three more singles (a couple of which being “Megablast” and “Don’t Make Me Wait”) that appeared on the rushed debut album “Into The Dragon.“ Together with releasing that record, Simenon also collaborated with veteran musician John Foxx on a project called Nation 12 that enjoyed marginal success in the United Kingdom.

Following that album Simenon hit a troubled period as he was commissioned for remix and production work for super model Naomi Campbell’s thankfully abandoned pop career. Despite that blemish Simenon still went on to become a successful producer, working with such acts as Depeche Mode, U2, David Bowie, Seal, Bjork, Sinéad O'Connor, Curve and even the likes of Consolidated. On his next two albums “Unknown Territory” and the William Burroughs inspired “Clear” that featured a grocery list of contributors, it was later dubbed that he had pioneered the (reluctantly mentioned) “genre” of “trip hop”.

Bomb The Bass went through a change in sound during the early 90s to follow and began to incorporate loud rock guitars until becoming unofficially inactive. After relocating to Amsterdam, starting his Electric Tone label and focusing on other projects Simenon also eventually went on to collaborate with Jack Dangers of Meat Beat Manifesto fame on 2001’s “Tracks”. It’s first release on the Mister-Ron label was minimally packaged to disguise itself as a white label US import out of NYC. It was later reissued shortly thereafter (with a pictured sleeve as shown above) on Rhythm King and then hit number two on the UK charts.
The bloodied smiley-face artwork, borrowed from the Watchmen comic books, and influenced much of the imagery surrounding the 'acid house' and 'rave' scenes.
The record supposedly cost £500 to make, in between Simenon's then work at a supermarket and as a DJ.

CHOICE CUT: Skid Row – Slave To The Grind

I offer many apologies for the lack of content over the last few months. Life has just been getting in the way of everything, and since the embodiment my very own existence as of late has been the sentiments of this song, I thought this article would be fitting…

Released: June 11, 1991 on a record of the same name.

Written by: Sebastian Bach, Rachel Bolan (a man) and none other than Dave “The Snake” Sabo.

This record, and song in particular were much heavier in contrast to Skid Row’s debut record (Self Titled, released in 1989) that I adamantly despised as a youngster. However, when I heard what I believe was the first single “Monkey Business” from their newest effort, I was taken by complete surprise. At that time I was already well into the journey of Metal with harder stuff and thought that the ‘hair bands’ were really lame (even Motley Crue “Theatre Of Pain” sucked to me), and while Skid Row wasn’t entirely of that ilk, they still had that sort of vibe. For me they just couldn’t stand up to acts like Slayer or Sepultura (Arise era).

When I first heard the riff to “Slave To The Grind” though, it made me all the more shell shocked, as it sounded as if this ‘pretty boy’ ballad-band had managed to grow some fortitude and become a little rough around the edges. Up until that point they were the type of band that square girls liked, or so my misguided mentality was some 15 years ago, and therefore I was unwilling to accept their efforts. Even giving a few specific songs on their first record some credit (mainly Youth Gone Wild), I never considered them a “real” Metal band (and to this day “I Remember You” still makes me see red in a “Stairway To Heaven” high school slow dance kind of way). However, when pressed on the issue this sophomore record proved me wrong, as my friends who were fans would later reveal on dubbed cassette tapes. The above-mentioned song, and the title track of this album (and article) were and are in fact crucial jams. More recently this record has even been described stylistically as if one were to take the Gun N’ Roses classic “Appetite For Destruction” and cross it with the aggression of early Pantera (pre-heroin Anselmo, Cowboys From Hell era).

Regardless, the unfortunate reality to come for the band (and many others) at this time was that this top-notch opus would flop and remain an oversight in music history due to a mammoth stylistic shift known as Grunge (another title which I reluctantly use) that emerged in popular aggressive music in the early 90s. This could have been seen as the greatest ambush in history, as the release of Nirvana’s Nevermind (an excellent record) in September of 1991 (only 4 months later) completely decimated anything in its way and exploded like a modern Beatlemania, spawning unfortunate and second rate counterparts for years to come. As one would guess, this left the now suddenly outdated bands like Skid Row doomed to everlasting embarrassment and commercial failure.

However, history isn’t always honest because aside from a business-related oversight you can still find gems or interesting parallels when you begin to look for them, and if for not only that fact alone Skid Row’s "Slave To The Grind" actually stands the test of time. Another interesting and off topic bit I’d like to include is that there was a song called “Get The Fuck Out” on this very album. Apparently due to its profanity there were two versions of the album, and it only appeared on the uncensored one. On the clean version, geared toward a ‘moral majority’ or ‘parents concerned about buying obscene content for their children audience’ that track was replaced by a song called “Beggar’s Day.” All of that aside though – it is said that “Get The Fuck Out” was recorded as a slighting response to the band Extreme’s (another pop rock contemporary) “Get The Funk Out” hit.

In conclusion and in the interest of saving face – I’d also like to mention the primary friend (who shall remain nameless to avoid embarrassment) responsible for my Skid Row exposure and said change of heart was also huge on Cinderella’s “Long Cold Winter” album, which I also felt was complete rubbish at the time and still do. So to give myself at least some benefit of doubt, and with all opinions on Skid Row’s second album aside, I was completely bang on with one of my original assessments at least – Cinderella always sucked.

Mix Review: THE PARTY'S OVER (2006)

The following is a review of a mix that I received at this year’s annual exchange. The swap is generally a random affair, but I was still fortunate enough to get a bunch of well-rounded selections contained under the title THE PARTY’S OVER. One Sean Hill, a fellow comrade of the Niagara Mix Tape Union created this compilation quite flawlessly.

There’s a lot involved in digesting this work of art beyond just the music itself. Anything from the Cthulhu and Odin themed artwork, to the Nietzsche influence contained in the liner notes – much of which is rather ‘tongue in cheek,’ certainly testify that there is more than just a party going on here.

We start this bad-ass with a song entitled “Attack With A Gas Mask” from the seminal Cleveland destruction unit known as 9 SHOCKS TERROR. This is a pretty solid opening, which contrasts nicely with a sample from a children’s show at the beginning to foreshadow the anger to come. TURBONEGRO is up next with “The Party Starts Now,” a b-side originally and one of many songs recently compiled on their Small Feces release. It’s a lovely Manitoba’s Wild Kingdom cover and excellent choice.

The legendary RAMONES and Sweden’s own REGULATIONS follow with two-garage rock inspired punk jams, from the originators to the recent wave (literally). Sean then delves into some obscurity with a couple of the selections to follow - starting with RED C’s “Pressure’s On.” A huge and often overlooked song that is showcased on the infamous Flex Your Head hardcore compilation from Dischord records. THE BODIES appear next with “Got Some Product”, which is in the same vein of old school punk perfection but with much more of a melodic rock lean.

We switch gears with the next selection to give the listener a bit of a break as RUMBLE SEAT'S “Walk Through The Darkness” plays like a sombre country intermission. For those not in the know, this group contains members of HOT WATER MUSIC. Just to ensure that you don’t sink too low, we’re right back to bat with “Circles” by DAG NASTY next. A DC punk classic without question that makes a nice transition into “Defeated” by THE OBSERVERS, who released one of the best punk LPs in 2004 called “So What’s Left Now.”

“Click And Repeat” by an act called HIRETSUKAN from Brooklyn (NY) follows. This song is taken from a highly overlooked record that was released on Canada’s own G7 Welcoming Committee. Not quite metal, not quite hardcore but chaotic, aggressive and poetic. Interesting.

We return to some late 70s punk obscurity from ACTIVE DOG with “Fun While It Lasts” originally released as a single back in the day. Members from this act went on to form THE MODERNETTES and POINTED STICKS – which effortlessly proves that this is a lovely selection and a Canadian KBD punk classic. We get into some politics with the next pair of tracks starting with PROPAGANDHI'S “Resisting Tyrannical Government” followed by BILLY BRAGG’S classic “A New England.”

Red Hot Chilli Pepper’s guitarist JOHN FRUSCIANTE is up next with a brilliant slow song entitled “Control” from one of his six solo albums released in between 2004 / 2005. Yes, I did say SIX and I’d wager that they’re all superb. This mellow vibe continues along with “Cadence For The Desert Sun” by Kid Kilowatt, which is certain to appease those with epic tastes.

Sean wakes the listener back up with a kick to the face known as “No 1 Out Of 6 Billion” by Germany’s DEAN DIRG, from their Last Kid On The Block album. In classic Detroit form - NEGATIVE APPROACH show up to the melee with “Nothing” to add insult to injury. Toronto’s own FUCKED UP then pile-drive everything home with “Jacob’s Ladder,” a yet to be released song that will appear on their upcoming Hidden World full length. As the song demonstrates, this album is without question going to be the best punk record released this year.

Next we change focus once again with “Moonshiner” by UNCLE TUPELO from their March 6-20, 1992 album. This song is an excellent mix of traditional mellow country filled with rural inspiration. There could not be more of a blatant contrast when the self-titled track by MINOR THREAT follows. We continue on this path from DC to Chicago with ”Zombie” from SCREECHING WEASEL'S second full length.

Our selector then returns to Washington (or NY) with “Banned In DC” by the legendary BAD BRAINS. There is nothing short of genius contained within this song. The same honour could easily be bestowed for the new school counterparts from Boston to follow known as CUT THE SHIT. Sean picked this track to name this entire compilation after and for very good reason. There is nothing short of fast and furious hardcore-punk that would impress anyone with a thinking mind.

Next up is BLACK FLAG, a band that certainly needs no introduction. From the Wasted Again album we’re offered “Gimmie Gimmie Gimmie” – which is unfortunately Rollins era, but you’ve still got to give credit where it’s due. “Goodbye” by REVOLUTION MOTHER from the “Enjoy The Ride” album follows to signify that the end is near. This outfit features the notorious Mike Vallely a professional skateboarder who also handles the occasional vocal duties. I’ve honestly never heard his other band(s), but this is heavily stoner rock influenced. Not awesome, but not bad…certainly larger-than-life though.

This ambitious opus ends with the triumphantly ridiculous “Freebird” by LYNYRD SKYNYRD - completely un-credited no less, meant to shock or surprise the listener I’d imagine. To say the least it’s a pretty bold, mildly absurd, and strangely righteous move. What’s even better is that it cuts off during the epic solo. Could that be a statement?

I am very impressed with this contribution and can’t wait to see what I’ll receive this coming year.

Original Hip-Hop: THE COLD CRUSH BROTHERS

The Cold Crush Brothers started in 1978 in New York City – or more specifically the Bronx. However to accurately begin this tale we must rewind a little further back to focus on the groups most valuable asset.

Grandmaster Caz, a crucial Cold Crush MC, began his journey into hip-hop way back in 1974 when he witnessed one of the legendary Kool Herc bloc parties. He immediately aspired to be like this legend on the wheels of steel, and took up DJing as well. As time went on, he started to emulate his mentor by playing parties under the moniker Cassanova Fly, which as history dictates was the growing foundation for everything within the genre of hip-hop today.

Soon after Caz went on to team up with another future Cold Crush MC known as JDL (Jerry D Lewis); and together they became “The Notorious 2.” During this period Caz began to further his skills and would occasionally MC along with JDL. This became an important feat in hip-hop history, as he was the first DJ to rhyme and cut simultaneously, and was even inducted into the Technics “DJ Hall Of Fame” in 1999 because of such abilities.

By this point the groundwork for The Cold Crush Brothers had already begun (with JDL) by DJ Charlie Chase and DJ Tony Tone. The collective then approached Caz to audition for the group in 1979. As he recollects “Charlie was tricking me into joining the crew…I didn’t realize it at the time.” Once he was finally assimilated The Cold Crush Brothers were officially born.

The original line up was as follows: The founders - DJ Charlie Chase and DJ Tony Tone. The Cold Crush MC's - Easy A.D, Almighty Kay Gee, Grandmaster Caz, Money Ray and Jerry D Lewis.

After perfecting their routines for over a year they began doing live performances, specializing in numerous lyrical battles that took place during that period. One such historic battle was captured in 1981 and released in 1991 on a disc entitled Afrika Bambaataa Presents: Hip-Hop Funk Dance Classic, Volume 1. This recording, along side their later released All The Way Live in ‘82 album, fully embody the genre before it became the commercial juggernaut in the 90s, or to where it currently resides today.

In their prime the Cold Crush Brothers performed with the likes of Grandmaster Flash, Treacherous 3, New Edition, Kurtis Blow and of course their arch nemesis The Fantastic 5. They were also involved in the first hip-hop beef when their successors The Sugarhill Gang released the song "Rapper's Delight" in 1979, which is widely recognized as the first hip-hop single (along side Fatback Band “King Tim III”). According to the legend, a verse used for it by Henry “Big Bank Hank” Jackson was literally swiped from one of Grandmaster Caz’ own rhymes. This was one in a long line of artists to reap the benefits of the Cold Crush genius, and could have been seen as foreshadowing for the future of their career(s).

Caz, definitely, without question being the lead man and the point man in the equation, was like the prototype for all of the studying that was going on. Some emcees will admit it, and some won’t.”

Despite the commercial setbacks of that time (and to follow) they solidified their infamy early on with an appearance in the movie Wild Style (1982), which would later become a hip-hop classic. They battle and perform in the film, which centres on a graffiti artist and the troubles of the South Bronx in the late 70s. As their cameos can attest they may also be exclusively responsible for introducing the “b-boy” look and style to hip-hop culture.

That same year Cold Crush finally had their first official release on wax in the form of a 12” entitled “The Weekend,” which was a party record that bragged about having fun on the weekend. The second single was “Punk Rock Rap” (1983) released on Tuff City and distributed by CBS. This was the first time an independent hip-hop label and a major worked together. For the better or worse of times to come, “Punk Rock Rap” was also the first recording to combine rock and rap together.

“Fresh, Wild, Fly & Bold” (1984) followed and was the most successful Cold Crush single to date, which sold 16,000 units in its first week. The record was filled with huge drum machine breaks, b-boy force, and electro blips. In yet another unfortunate turn for the group, a dispute between Tuff City and Profile for distribution hindered the sales to come, which many believe would have gone gold. The other obstacle was that by the time it was readily available, groups like Run DMC and LL Cool J were making the old school a thing of the past.

In 1986 hip-hop fans started to fully embrace the new era of artists leaving Cold Crush behind, and things inevitably went south. That same year Grandmaster Caz left the crew, and the group subsequently called it quits. Two years later Kay Gee and Tony Tone reformed Cold Crush as a duo, releasing "Troopers"(1988) to little notice. Around that same time Grandmaster Caz dropped two solo albums “The Judge” and “The Hitman” for Tuff City Records. The albums demonstrated that Caz was able to make the shift in rap styles better than any of his contemporaries, but still gained little commercial ground.

Thanks in part to old school revival of 90s era hip-hop, some interest did return and The Cold Crush Brothers reunited to perform once again. In 2002 the group did one of their annual parties for their 22nd Anniversary in New York City. They performed with such artists as Doug E Fresh, Biz Markie, Rakim, KRS One, Big Daddy Kane, DJ Jazzy Jeff and Grand Wizard Theodore. It was almost as if history gave them a swan song, as later that year original member Eric Hoskins (Money Ray) died of Cancer. Since then Cold Crush continue to linger on and perform all across the United States.

Despite having never made a record that lives up to their name, they do have number of influential singles on the record books that paved the way for all of the acts within the genre to follow. Their legacy could be compared to that of the Rolling Stones, as they remain one of the most influential and legendary crews in the history of hip-hop.

Mixtape Essentials: Quicksand’s Slip

I first heard Quicksand more than a decade ago in the smoky attic bedroom of a kid named Larry. Larry (who would later make national headlines when he and another Canadian kid disappeared into thin air during a trip to the Netherlands) was a much older, much cooler guy, and as far as I was concerned he knew everything about music.

We’d been up all night drinking, smoking – doing all the things teenagers do on blacklit weekend nights. We’d been listening to Blur and Throbbing Gristle and Dead Kennedys; we’d been doing shots of vodka and feeding crickets to Larry’s pet lizard; we’d been complaining about school and girls and jobs; but mostly, we’d been talking about music.

“You have got to hear this band, Quicksand. They are completely amazing,” Larry said, as if it were the most serious thing anyone had said all our lives. “They’re slow and grinding, but at the same time they’re catchy. I’ve never heard anything like it before.” He made the universal palm-muted chugging guitar motion: left hand in the air, right hand digging an imaginary pick hard into imaginary de-tuned strings. I knew what it meant, and it was a good thing.

And so, after a few seconds of rummaging through piles of discs and some quick button presses, we were in it. Quicksand’s Slip was indeed like nothing I’d ever heard before. The guitars were thick, slow and intense; the rhythm section punishing and deadly precise; the vocals exactly halfway between singing and shouting. It was the kind of music that made you want to punch a hole through the wall - but at the same time it was familiar and tuneful. You could even shout along to it. It was like a more deliberate, more elegant version of the hardcore I was used to.

Quicksand mapped the uncharted territory between Helmet’s raw power and Fugazi’s blinding sophistication. Songs like “Freezing Process” had parts that wanted to be pop, but the music underneath the melody was too harsh and grinding to let them be.

And the music was only half the story – singer Walter Schreifels, known for his earlier stints with hardcore stalwarts Youth of Today and Gorilla Biscuits, had a voice that was raw and emotional and real. Seeing them live years later, I saw Walter do something that would forever link itself to his vocal style in my brain: during the verses, he’d reach up with both hands and grab his hair, pulling it tighter as the music built up to the choruses, face reddening, as if he were about to rip a chunk out of his head.

Quicksand were a prime example of music that worked not because of what was played but how it was played. The guitars throbbed and simmered, building a tension that almost made you grind your teeth – you could feel the pick grinding the strings in slow, hard bursts. And when the tension became too much, and the fierce, glorious release finally came, it was enough to give you goose bumps.

As track 6, Lie and Wait, broke into its dissonant guitar solo, I was hooked. And from that night on, I’ve divided people into two groups: those who understand Quicksand, and those who don’t.

Though Quicksand had a minor radio hit two years later with Landmine Spring (from their second album, Manic Compression) they never enjoyed a tremendous amount of commercial success. And while creative differences indefinitely stalled the release of their third album during the late 90s, Quicksand’s trademark sound was appropriated by dog-chain and mesh-shirt-wearing mooks and perverted into what would eventually become known as Nu-Metal.

Though I can’t think of a worse genre to have spawned (and for my own satisfaction, I’d rather blame Helmet), Quicksand remain an important (and often overlooked) piece in the 3-D puzzle of rock history. A true “band’s band”, Quicksand have influenced an entire generation of musicians, and firmly bonded the group of fans who saw the genius in the music they played. Slip is, without question, a masterwork of post-hardcore. Thank you for the introduction, Larry.

THE BLUES...and Mike Todd

The following is a brief interview that was pieced together from various segments of correspondence with a comrade of the Niagara Mixtape Union who goes by the name of Mike Todd. We picked his brain for some recommendations and thoughts about Blues music, since it’s been one of his driving fascinations for quite some time.

Mike is generally known for his contributions to skateboarding in the Niagara region, as he operated a number of stores throughout the late 90s until just recently. Although he no longer works in that field, he still lives to thrash and operates a Blog that we strongly encourage you to check out.

Okay so you want to get into or learn more about the Blues? Well my brother Joe C. Blues once said,

"Blues ain't nothing but a good man being down."

You see a bad man can't have the blues, he is too busy in his crimes to find emotion, and since the day of the light cometh like a thief in the night, he will be blind to the sound of the blues. You on the other hand are a good man, full of emotion, but maybe you are feeling alone like a stone? Or work is hard to find? Or time off work is hard to get? Or the opposite sex pays no attention? Or love feels one sided? Four bald tires? Parents suck? The world is the shits? Best friend gone? Are the bad men keeping you down with their racket??? Not a racket per-se, but maybe some fuck stole your bike or broke into your car? Well let’s just say a blues artist steals our feelings and puts them into songs and lyrics we just can't. Now that’s a form of racketeering at its finest. And since you're a good man and not the first to be blue as the sea, you can now relate to the blues through someone who also has been in those troubled waters before you - or basically go read a book, or check out my mixtape below to find the artists I am backing.

The best things in life are the times you have getting somewhere; the searching. You'll find what suits you, so I won't drop names, my feet already hurt enough as it is. Just don't go out and buy an Eric Clapton or BB King record. Or even worse yet - that one where they are in a car together. For all I care they crash that shit the Mississippi River. Give me that kind of confetti I would throw it around too... Who needs a drink??? You can't be that rich and keep singing the blues.

When was the first time you ever first made or received a mix tape?
Probably in grade 5 or 6, I got a ghetto blaster for X-mas. So I took my turn table, all my favourite albums, and recorded each of my choice songs onto a tape in the ghetto blaster... Funny thing, I was young and the tape player didn't have proper 'line in,' but did have a mic input, so I got a mic and closed the doors of my room. I told my parents to be quiet and put the mic to the speakers of the turn table... and I did that a lot. As a skateboarder most my life, I must say, making mixed tapes of songs from our favourite videos was the baddest shit, it just made you want to sk8. There were tons of those sk8 mixes around our group of friends.

What got you into the blues?
Well, my friend Jeff Hardy loved the Blues Brothers movie, and I met him in grade 8, so that was my intro. Than I realized my dad had a Sonny Terry and Brownie McGee album at home, so I rocked that and also went out and found the Blues Brothers albums at flea markets. But than it faded cause all I wanted to do was skateboard. Blues tunes aren't exactly tunes that light a fire under your ass to go jump down shit. But than I met my brother Joe C. Blues, he was into the Blues Brothers movie and records too, so we clicked and it turned into a friendly competition to find the most blues records. I would have to say Joe won, but we were both into finding the original tunes that The Blues Brothers had in them... when Joe brought home a Son House record... we lost our minds - that song "Grinnin' in Your Face" it caught our hearts in its hands.

CBC Radio 3: “Summer Road Trip Mixtape” SPOTLIGHT

Amongst many others standing strong, there is a great radio program called "CBC Radio 3" that happens weekly here in Canada - airing across the country, which is also now available on Podcast. The most recent episode of this excellent program (number 62) offered a themed special called the “Summer Road Trip Mixtape,” which is pretty self explanatory – and that you can download, or find out more information about by visiting HERE.

BACKGROUND on CBC RADIO 3:

Years ago I always used to listen to a program called “RadioSonic” hosted by Canadian semi-celebrity Grant Lawrence, of The Smugglers fame, which aired on CBC Radio 2 every Saturday evening on 94.1FM out here on the east coast. Since the days of David Wisdom on “Realtime,” the shows previous incarnation, or Mr. Lawrence’s later reign – things have changed some. In 2003 – the “RadioSonic” name was dropped in favour of the all-encompassing “CBC Radio 3” tag, which it now holds today. A year ago the program even went back to it’s ‘live to air’ format, as it once was some ten years previous.

The spotlight has pretty much remained the same throughout all of these changes over the years, and is primarily focused on Canadian talent, independent, unknown or emerging for the most part. Since this leap forward - they’ve enhanced quite a bit with a solid website to accompany the weekly program, and even an ‘on demand’ Podcast that offers almost every previous episode aired. They also have a plethora of guest hosts and contributors - Chris Murphy and Jay Ferguson being amongst some of the names, that are more commonly known from their work in Canadian super-group Sloan.

The Art Of Cassette Culture (Review)

Mix Tape: The Art of Cassette Culture explores the sound mixes and art we created in our bedrooms long before iTunes and Photoshop.' ―Michael Dougherty, Blackbook Magazine. Fall 2004

Mix Tape: The Art Of Cassette Culture is a visually heavy, coffee table book that was created a couple of years back by the one and only Thurston Moore, whose infamy as an artist and musician certainly precede him. More importantly to most he’s a founding member of the seminal art-rock unit known as Sonic Youth, and father to virtually everything that is hip amongst the “indie” world at large. Don’t let his resume or reputation steal the spotlight on this one though, as this book is entirely about the love and charisma of “the mix tape.”

Contained within the pages of this fine work is a collection from various contributors ranging anywhere from Dean Wareham of Galaxie 500 fame, to Glen E. Friedman (Photographer), or even John Zorn (Composer), amongst other like-minded friends. The submissions incorporated are an assortment of fine art expression, stories, essays, or even theories associated with the splendour of said phenomenon. Many other facets of this book specifically deal with the relation between emotion in creating or receiving a work of this medium and it’s cultural importance. One section of the book in particular irreverently details this significance, specifically in how they can truly be considered a valid and modern form of the “time capsule.”

There are some other classic moments contained within these pages, one in particular being Ahmet Zappa’s donation entitled “Sensitive Pussies Should Not Listen To This Awesome Set Of Ditties,” which is a collection of eighties hard-rock jams. Coverage of Christian Marclay’s “Moebius Loop” art installation is another treat, which was crafted entirely of zip ties and old cassettes measuring a monstrous 24 x 84 x 240 inches. Moore’s introduction even drops some science with the much toted “home taping is killing music” propaganda - used quite liberally by record companies of the past, documenting how much like the MP3 and CDR of today – they were once the primary target of concern. He even goes on to talk about the effect Hip-Hop had on this art form, and the advent of the “Boom Box.”

Another interesting rhetorical question raised in later a segment presents a debate that crafting a mix-tape with someone else in mind, or exclusively for them, always subconsciously results in some form of narcissism, as it’s really more about you than the other party. On the surface this text in a later segment even begins to touch on the Digital versus Analog argument presenting a theory on “ear heart listening.” Moore illustrates a comparison between definitive (digital), and non-definitive (analog) sound waves. Meaning, “with digital your brain hears the information in numeric perfection,” where as “analog has the mystery arc where cosmos exist, which digital has not reigned in.” He goes on to describe how repeated listens of an analog source present “a new sensation” each time, where as “digital offers one cold kiss.”

With the advent of technology (specifically the ipod) aside, I’ve personally never believed that the days of cassettes, or the ‘mix tape’ to be specific - were ever gone. The convenience associated with computers may have conquered how people commonly share music in recent years (playlists), and as the ‘tape deck’ may not be as prevalent in the average home or car stereo as in it’s “golden era,” I still cannot foresee, or entirely resign myself to such defeat. That could certainly spell out a bit of my stubbornness, or disassociation from “our troubled youth” however, which is also a bitter pill considering I’m not even much of an elder.

Anyway, if you’ve ever managed to scrounge up anything in reference to this book, especially reviews, most folks are quick to drop those two cents in their state of the union address, included along with a savvy description of the contents within of course. I didn’t realize that making mix tapes has become such an elitist, throwback, or luddite activity, but I suppose it’s fair to be a bit of a cultural-sceptic these days, and so the sentiments of “what was better before” march right along with the territory. I can’t say that I entirely discount those concerns or thoughts either mind you. There is an inherent nostalgia that will always remain apparent in creating these works now, but to allow such interference defeats the purpose, or original intent behind the practise to begin with. From this rant however, I must digress…

Outside the self-righteous hype or rhetoric surrounding this opus, it serves to be an excellent documentation of the true art and appeal surrounding the mix tape. It has its guilty moments, like any vehicle of ‘the past’ - but is humble and separates from simple over indulgence or a lack of substance. The only set back I felt when I finished thumbing through it was that it seemed a little short. That minor flaw is easily reduced however, due to the fact that it is completely brilliant to browse through, and has such an impressive layout, which captures the personal authenticity of a “mix tape,” almost like you’re holding the actual source material.

The background on this for some of the outsiders is as follows: Annually the Niagara Mix-Tape Union conduct an exchange associated with the SCENE music festival. The guidelines are simply to put together a mix in your flavour, and present it to us on the day of the event. From there, the contributions are judged based on decoration, and the top five awarded are given prize packages in gratitude of their efforts. Beyond that, every submission from there is placed into a box for a ‘blind grab,’ in which everyone who has submitted something can randomly receive the work of another. That’s basically it.

1st Prize.

This is one of the most interesting and clever submissions that we’ve ever received over the years. No one up until this point had ever used Lego as a decorative theme, but it worked out very well. As the note on the ‘belly’ mentions, he had originally planned on using a cassette tape, which would have been inserted as the ‘heart.’ Somewhere in the process of compiling this opus, he noticed that he didn’t have any left, and so it morphed into a CD as a ‘jetpack’ instead. It’s pretty flawless anyway you look at it though. This was a shoe-in as the winner as soon as I saw it.

2nd Prize.

This submission is yet another in unclaimed territory for decoration. This person made the ‘packaging’ of the mix a crafty jean pocket. Aside from looking very awesome, it also served to be quite functional. I don’t have too much more to add on this one, as it’s pretty self-explanatory.

3rd Prize.

This is another skilful, simple and effective design. The case was entirely made of cardboard, which folded out with pasted pictures, and was held closed by a tiny metal clip. The theme in the artwork was also well executed. From what I recall, all of the pictures included were in the same element as the cover. A sort of propaganda like, golden age Americana idea, with an early technology or a science fiction sort of angle. Classic.

4th Prize.

A picture doesn’t do this work it’s full justice unfortunately. This was another sort of cardboard creation that had been decorated over very well. It seriously looked like a finished product of an album that you would buy in a store. I’m not positive as to what the over all theme was, but it did include some sort of ‘social equation’ on the back. Something in reference to music nerds, or emotion in relation to music. I honestly can’t recall exactly, but I do remember being really impressed, and thus why it placed.

5th Prize.

This was our final of five placements, although admittedly it was quite tough to choose, as we did receive a ton that would have also deserved to claim this very spot. I didn’t get a detailed look at this work aside from its decoration, which was a kind of fabric tape over the cover. Whenever I look at it now, it seems as if it would be a prison theme. That, or possibly Beetlejuice? Either way, this is another straightforward and successful design.

Honourable mentions:

I’ve included another couple submissions that were outstanding, and easily could have placed. This was submitted by the lovely Margaret Thompson, an ‘insider’ that helps with the Niagara Mix-Tape Union dealings. She didn’t want to claim a prize in order for someone else to have one, but this probably would have taken second place very easily. The entire theme of the mix was candy, and as you can see by the packaging it was able to transform into a gumball machine. The severity of the theme even went so far as to have pretty much every title feature the word candy somehow.

This bad-boy was submitted by a fellow named Sean Condon who’s been taking part in these swap meets since day one. Apart from being a fountain of music knowledge, he clearly knows how to knock one out of the park with layout and design as well. It’s unfortunate that you can’t see the full extent of its majesty by this picture, but it had a three-page fold out, which had been mocked up in some sort of graphic program. It looked completely like a finished product you would purchase for an album, and is one of the only submissions we’ve ever received that didn’t have some form of ‘hands on’ feel that could have easily placed. They seriously should have got this man to design the SCENE compilation CD packaging, as this is far superior. Anyway, all of the judges were severely impressed, and thus why it gets the second honourable mention.

Funniest cover of a submission we’ve ever received. This wasn’t a straight-edge theme mix either, although that would have been a flawless cover for one.
